Japanese Arita-yaki Porcelain Charger with Sometsuke Sansui Decoration
Description
Japanese Arita-yaki (Arita ware) porcelain charger plate, decorated in the classic underglaze blue and white Sometsuke style. The central motif depicts an idealized and traditional Sansui (mountain and water) landscape featuring pine trees, rolling hills, jagged cliffs, and distant huts. The wide rim is adorned with a geometric tortoiseshell grid pattern interleaved with round medallions containing stylized floral and crane motifs. Signed in kanji script on the lower left side, most likely late Taishō Period (1912–1926) or early Shōwa Period (1926–1989), 16-1/4″ (DIA). Provenance: Private collection (Birmingham, Michigan).
