Pair of Meiji Period Japanese Shokudai Candlesticks
Description
Pair of Meiji period (1868-1912) Shokudai or traditional Japanese candlesticks or candle stands, late 19th/early 20th Century, each 22″ (H). Shokudai were historically reserved for use in Buddhist temples (Butsudan) and Samurai residences, these candlesticks are characterized by their sharp metal pricket spikes designed to hold warosuko, traditional Japanese candles. Each features a broad floral-shaped base inspired by the chrysanthemum flower, with engraved floral and botanical motifs on the cylindrical column and scalloped cup-like top. The metal surface has a naturally aged patinated finish. Provenance: Private collection (Birmingham, Michigan). CONDITION: Patinated surface with some very minor surface wear, discoloration, and scratching, mostly on the underside of the bases, all consistent with age and use.
