Lot 95:
Antique Victorian Era German Bisque Porcelain Statue Woman 24" (H)
Description
Large antique late Victorian Era Continental bisque porcelain statue, most likely German, of a young woman in traditional country attire, possibly returning from a well. The statue represents an idealized view of a simpler bucolic life of former times, which was very popular at the turn of the last century, contrasting the realities of industrialized urban life that many people would have been more familiar with. The figure is painted in pastel colors with floral patterns on the apron and skirt, and is holding a small barrel in her left hand. The base is modeled to resemble a tree stump with leaves and grass. The figure is wearing a pink headscarf, a purple bodice, and a yellow apron with floral decoration. Shoes are painted purple with green and gold accents. The underside of the base bears a blue painted mark resembling “HC” and an incised mark “AL”. Circa late 19th/early 20th century. 24″ (H). The piece has a former auction tag from C.B. Charles Galleries (Bloomfield Hills Michigan), who was active from the 1960s through the 1990s and known famously as the “auctioneer to the stars”, after auctioning high-profile celebrity estates such as Judy Garland, Mary Pickford, and John Barrymore. CONDITION: Possible older repair to right wrist, please see last photo. SHIPPING: In-House Shipping Available
