Description
Housepost totem, from the Kaguru People of Eastern Tanzania, 94-1/2″ (H), on a custom made 12-3/4″ square black painted iron base. Provenance: Private collection (Birmingham, Michigan), Totem Sandton Gallery, Sandton, Gauteng, South Africa (2004). The Kaguru People make mainly initiation houseposts, but also make trunk figures, axes, staffs, and flywhisks. Their style is characterized by a certain directness, a desire to depict the essential with a few strokes of the adze. At one time every village had a tall heavy wooden post, such as this one. They were erected in a house used for meetings of “secret societies or initiations, to impart a sacred character to the building. CONDITION: No condition issues noted.
