Description

Antique salt-glazed stoneware jar featuring an ovoid form with a semi-rounded tooled rim and two applied tab handles. The jar is adorned with hand-brushed cobalt blue floral motifs, often referred to as the ‘Alexandria flower’ design. The salt-glazed surface exhibits a textured finish. While unmarked, the stylistic markers suggest production by Wilkes Street Pottery in Alexandria, Virginia, circa 1835–1850, possibly for local merchant Hugh Charles Smith. The decoration is attributed to skilled artisans of the era, such as free African-American potter David Jarbour. 10-1/2” tall. CONDITION: Chip on the base rim of jar, as well as wear on the bottom from use. SHIPPING: In-House Shipping Available
