Epic Winter Sporting Auction - Guns, Knives, Lures, Relics
Lot 82:
Pair of Schenkl Artillery Shells w/ Ammo Can
Description
Pair of Civil War-era Schenkl artillery shells, including one intact example and one cut-open specimen displaying internal construction. The intact shell exhibits a tapered cylindrical profile with pronounced threading at the base. The cut-open shell reveals a cross-section of the iron casting and internal lead shrapnel balls designed to enhance its effectiveness as a projectile. Both pieces show visible surface oxidation consistent with their age and military use. Also included in the lot is a vintage ammunition can marked ‘840 Cartridges, 5.56 MM, Ball M193, 10 RD Clips, Bandoleers, Lot TW 1-303’ in yellow stenciled lettering.
CONDITION: The intact Schenkl shell shows significant surface rust and aging but remains structurally solid with discernible threading. The cut-open shell displays heavy oxidation on the casing, with visible embedded lead shrapnel balls in a degraded interior. The included ammunition can exhibits surface wear, scratches, and paint loss consistent with storage and handling over time.
