Lot 80:
Civil War Ammunition & Buckle Collection
Description
A collection of Civil War-era artifacts consisting of ammunition, buckles, and metal fragments, sourced from historically significant locations including Berkeley Plantation, Murfreesboro, Bentonville, and Gaines Mill. The lot includes several period projectiles, such as lead bullets and Minie balls, metal fragments, and a U.S. Army belt buckle marked with “US.” Each subset is stored in labeled envelopes correlating to their recovery site for provenance. Also included is an older cloth flag, featuring a red circle emblem, likely Japanese in origin, accompanied by its original envelope. This group serves as a tangible representation of battlefield relics from the Civil War with supplementary World War II-era material.
CONDITION: The collected ammunition and fragments exhibit signs of corrosion and surface wear consistent with their age and long-term burial. The belt buckle shows moderate oxidation and patina on its surface. The flag has notable discoloration, staining, and light fabric fraying but remains intact with its tie-strings attached. All items show evidence of handling and age-related wear but maintain structural integrity. No restoration or cleaning is apparent, and the items remain in as-found condition.
