Lot 78:
Civil War Military Insignias & Uniform Buttons
Description
Collection of Civil War-era military insignia pins and uniform buttons, including various U.S. Marine Corps bronze eagle and globe insignia, uniform buttons from U.S. Volunteer units, and other notable artifacts. This lot includes a group of Marine Corps cap insignias with embossed eagle and globe motifs, clearly marked as bronze, and presented on an original labeled card. Additionally, several uniform buttons are mounted on cards providing contextual information concerning their historical significance, provenance, and recovery locations. Highlights include buttons associated with U.S. Mass Volunteer Militia recovered from White House (Virginia), and others linked to battles at North Anna, Bermuda Hundred, and Cedar Mountain, with recovery dates mostly noted in the 1960s. Cards offer detailed handwritten annotations describing battlefield locations, regimental origins, and specific dates of losses or recovery.
CONDITION: The insignia and buttons exhibit varying degrees of wear consistent with age and battlefield recovery. Some buttons display notable patina, corrosion, and scratches, while others remain in relatively good condition with legible details. The bronze Marine Corps insignias show mild oxidation but retain their embossed details. The handwritten annotation cards show signs of age-related wear, including discoloration, foxing, and minor tears, but remain legible.
