Lot 47a:
Swedish Model 1867 Rolling Block Military Rifle, Likely m/1867-89 Conversion, 8x58R
Description
We believe this rifle to be a Swedish Model 1867 Rolling Block military rifle, most likely later updated to the m/1867-89 configuration and chambered in 8x58R Swedish, based on its dimensions, configuration, and inspection markings. This is a single-shot rolling block action rifle with exposed hammer and rotating breechblock. The barrel measures approximately 37 inches with an overall length of approximately 51.75 inches. It features a full-length military wood stock with two barrel bands, sling swivels mounted to the lower stock and front barrel band, and a steel buttplate. The rifle is fitted with a military ladder rear sight graduated in meters, including a clearly marked “200 m” base and numeric graduations visible on the sight leaf. The chamber measures approximately .54 inch at the breech and the rifled bore measures approximately .45 inch across the lands, dimensions consistent with the 8x58R Swedish cartridge. Swedish crown and oval numeric inspection marks are present on the metal components, further supporting Swedish military origin. Based on barrel length, overall length, metric sighting system, chamber dimensions, and inspection stamps, we believe this rifle to be a Swedish Model 1867 Rolling Block, likely converted to 8x58R under Sweden’s late 19th-century modernization program.
CONDITION: Condition reflects honest military service wear. The metal surfaces show an even aged patina with thinning original finish and scattered handling marks consistent with age and use. Edges remain well defined with no visible signs of modern refinishing observed. The wood stock shows handling impressions, surface scratches, and normal wear appropriate for a 19th-century service rifle, with no major structural cracks observed in the provided examination. Swedish inspection marks remain visible though softened by age. The bore is rifled and appears serviceable. Overall, this rifle presents as an authentic and solid example of a Swedish military rolling block with typical period wear.
