WWII Japanese Type 98 Officer’s Sword
Description
A World War II period Japanese Type 98 Shin-Gunto officer’s sword featuring a curved steel blade with bright polish and defined edge. The hilt retains its regulation brown silk wrap over ray skin with gilt floral menuki and brass mounts, including a pierced tsuba of standard floral pattern. The saya is wood with leather covering and suspension rings, retaining a fragile paper inspection seal from the Japanese Swordsmith Society. Traditional military mounts of this type were carried by commissioned officers of the Imperial Japanese Army.
Blade measures 25¼ inches, overall length 38½ inches.
CONDITION: Blade shows scattered light surface marks and minor oxidation toward the tip; mounts exhibit patina and handling wear; scabbard covering shows notable loss and flaking to finish.
