Description

Kentucky-style percussion long rifle originally built as a flintlock and later converted to percussion. The lock plate is engraved and marked “W. Wells & Bro., Madison Ind.” with decorative scrollwork and bird motifs. The full octagonal barrel is signed “H. Burns,” likely indicating the barrel maker. The rifle features a double set trigger, brass furniture including buttplate, trigger guard, and patchbox, and a curly maple stock with traces of original dark finish and hand shaping typical of 19th-century Midwestern rifles. The rifle is accompanied by a family provenance letter and related shooting accessories including a powder horn, bullet mold, powder measurer, bullets, percussion caps, and cloth patches.
CONDITION: The barrel and lock show an aged brown and gray patina with surface oxidation and light pitting near the breech. The stock exhibits wear with visible finish loss, handling marks, and scattered cracks, including an open split at the wrist extending forward of the lock area. Brass furniture displays an aged tone with light tarnish. Overall, the rifle shows honest age and use consistent with its period.
