Lot 2521:
British Flintlock Musket c.69 Caliber
Description
British Flintlock Musket approximately .69 caliber, featuring a full-length smoothbore barrel secured by three iron barrel bands and mounted in a walnut stock. The musket retains its flintlock ignition system with flat-faced lockplate, cock, and frizzen typical of early 19th-century British manufacture. The barrel displays Birmingham proof marks including a crown over “RV,” indicating proof during the reign of Queen Victoria between 1837 and 1901. This likely places the arm in the period of transition from flintlock to percussion ignition systems, when many flintlocks were either newly built in the 1830s–1840s or later converted and reproved. The furniture is of iron, including trigger guard, buttplate, and ramrod fittings, and the musket retains its button-head iron ramrod.
CONDITION: Metal surfaces show a smooth brown patina with scattered spots of oxidation and light pitting. The stock displays an aged refinish with moderate handling marks and light surface wear throughout, showing typical character for an antique musket of this era. Edges remain generally sharp with no major cracks noted. Overall, the firearm appears in good antique condition.
